last night went to "the stow" my mates dogs were back in action for the ocean trailer puppy stakes , since my dad left the cheap side as a bookmaker some time in the late 80's i have been back a dozen or so times but last night it struck me .............. the dog game as i knew it has finished , the first clue was in the car parks they were not even half full , they used to be packed in like sardines then take the bookies for what i can remember there were 15 bookies when my dad stood there 9 on the cheap side and 6 in the main ring , well the cheap side only had 2 bookies standing and that looked 1 too many !!! the whole place lacked punters and atmosphere and i know there has been a cloud hanging over the stow for many a year but it can only be the saturday nights and 6 packers keeping the place alive . ok the fast food area was fairly busy but that was about it , the tote girls were doing crosswords ............ how dare you ask them to place a bet for you was the look my girlfriend got !!! i have always regarded walthamstow as the premier grehound track but after last nights visit i worry for its future , yes i realise this has all been said before but with land scarce in london , property prices only going one way and business at the stow to my eyes only going one way how long will the chandlers resist the temptation ? had a enjoyable night nonetheless one of our dogs got thru to next weeks semi final but the highlight of the evening was butterbridge ali it wasn,t just the time that was impressive but he seemed to visibly go into turbo when erinaceous rapid got to within a length of the dog and pulled away by 7l , well done to the hare driver aswell , i realise he was only doing his job but he prevented potential carnage after a dog got knocked over at the first bend got up and started running the wrong way towards the other 5 dogs .

one small and unsuccessful trade wishing to oppose beau michel in the 4.40 chelt his last run was a fortunate win on heavy ground i was divided whether to lay him in the win market or back present glory in a match bet versus beau michel ............. unfortunately for me i took the match bet route backing present glory £150 @ 2.00 .............. i had the "value" but nothing ele other than a loss of £150 .
