i have backed hardy eustace for the champion hurdle @ 6.4 on betfair , although obviously detroit city has improved substancially since last cheltenham i have not been overly impressed by him this season , and i can see him getting beat , im a inca fan but the jockey situation is a worry i remember the barry cash days and i was at leopardstown for his last run and the manner of his defeat is a worry as he was upsides the winner at the last but found little on the run in , but im sure the hill will suit him better , but i have backed hardy for £200 @ 6.4 . MH thought that come bye was value in the 2.45 folk making him a 7/1 shot against the 14/1 on offer he was keen to oppose lannigans lock in the same race , well i had £150 ew @ 14/1 on come bye all was going ok until a nr was announced totally changing the complexion of the race , i was arbing the bet so i was now laying in the place mkt where 3 runners would be placed but my bet with the bookies would be paid 1/4 odds the first two . i took a bit of a flyer ,my lay of comebye in the place mkt with the reduction factor was @ 2.83, i started to back it @ 3.2 , in the end i backed £112 @ 3.48 and layed £37 @ 2.83 lannigans lock was laid @ 1.92 for £70 , both were successful . in the win mkt i laid back £225 @ 8/1 on come bye £150 of this was pre race and £75 ir, while lannigans lock was layed for £60 @ 5.0 . with come bye leading all the way and lannigans lock out of the frame MH hit the bullseye and a profit of £715.04 was achieved .

usually i would have played in the 4.50 plum laying the fav never so blue , a horse MH was keen to take on , but his message was 15 mins late and it clashed with the optimum message , so i listened to the MH bets and got them on , then i called the optimum line ,in this time the 15/8 had disappeared on his selection femme d'avril and never so blue had drifted on the exchanges , my discipline/stubborness kicked in so i decided not to lay the fav , so i suppose i have MH to thank for being late !!! that im not going to either cheltenham or aintree ................ but i am planning to go to the friday of royal ascot !!! has a day at the royal meeting ever been lost to waterlogging ............. well i was not gonna let the great british weather beat me so i decided to take a trip up to the midlands for a days racing at warwick , i looked up the AA route planner to get my route to warwick racecourse will they directed me up the M1 after that it got rather complicated , so i ditched that and looked at my map , the route could not have been easier M25/M40 J15 !!! kept the radio on bbc5live as i was half expecting a inspection to be announced @ 11.30............. but we arrived at the course in plenty of time although i took great care in parking my car as i didn,t want to be stuck in the heavy ground needing to be pulled out by a tractor after the last , other racegoers were not so fortunate .......... a quiet day betting wise with only one bet in the shape of the isiris insider baron windrush , a race in which i fancied mr dow jones who stays forever and will definitely act in the testing conditions , i was just about to place a forcast bet when i met a jolly mate from the area who "puts on" for a living , he had something in the 3.58 monmore , he was one of many who had to get £1000 on trap 6 @ first show , he had told his mates who were with him and it was a funny sight at the betting shop counter as about a dozen blokes all with slips n cash in hand were waiting for the first show to come through , i thought it was bang out of order that these "mates" were not letting him get his bet on first , 6/4 was the first show and all hell broke loss as the world and his dog wanted to get on , the dozen quickly doubled , justice was done as the 6/4 went to7/4 the price my mate who gave me the info got , then support came in as it was sent off a well supported 11/8 fav , the dog duly won and the atmosphere was electric with shouts of OI OI !! not the most exciting of days but a profit of £436.66 so cant complain , as already stated i put all my efforts into the 8 runner 4.00 @ ludlow eventually trading 3 horses , once i was up n running i noticed there had been support for kickahead it was trading 10/10.5 and 2.56/2.62 win n place and i could get 10/1 ew with lads i was allowed £190 ew , ouininpohja was trading slightly below evens but i felt mr findlay wud support his charge and took a bit of a flyer having £900 @ evens noting that there was substancial funds at 2.00 and above waiting to back the horse and sunday city was trading around 4.5 for a win and 1.55 for a place i backed this each way , laying at the prices quoted it was all going as planned , then isiris gave kickahead as a insider but rather than act as added momentum it seemed to have the reverse effect !!! i was left with a outstanding £50 ew @ 9/1 when the tapes went up as the horse had traded as high as 18.5 before the off , well the horse travelled most smoothly once settled and i laid £50 @ 5.1 i/r it went past the post a sh winner with the horse heavily supported in the photo at rates 1.01/1.02/1.03/1.04 ................... how these punters must have sweated as a stewards was quickly announced , i felt it could go either way , preferring to lock in a decent profit either way than rely on the stewards laying £500 @ 1.21 , kickahead was announced the winner and a profit of £436.66 was achieved .

had some business to attend to in southend during the day and some mates had asked me to see the improving shrimpers play crystal palace at fortress roots hall in the evening , as a lad sufc were my local club and every other friday night my dad would take me along to watch the blues it was our early "bonding" sessions father & son !!! i strongly fancied southend to get something out of the game tonight apart from saturdays blip against sunderland like my p/l there had been definite signs of improvement of late by steve tilsons men , but tonight was a prime example of why im not a great fan of football betting , southend have 75 % of the play numerous scoring opportunities against the visitors one ................. they only need one opportunity to register a goal and a 1-0 victory , apart from the result it was a enjoyable evening and brought back some happy memories of past visits to roots hall .

im not a fan of sunday racing/betting ............

i realise its here to stay and that it provides folk who work mon/fri a leisure activity , but from a personal perspective im not a lover, not on religous grounds or anything like that but i have been brought up as sunday being a family day and i have no interest of being stuck up in my office on the pc i prefer to be out visiting frds & family . well this morning i was over at the kennels walking my greyhound pup this will be a regular sunday past time stopping off at a pub for a jar or two , but my mate has a brewery attached to the kennels so we stayed there for a couple , i got home at 2.30 and called isiris who were my only service posting a message today , they gave two against the field in the hunter chase @ 4.00 , well that dovetailed nicely into my day as they was a bunch of us going to the local at 3.45 to watch my team spurs play fulham in the cup , so 6 of us piled into laddies @ 3.55 to watch the race , i asked all for a £3 whip and said we wud have a team bet of a £3 forcast combination costing £18 selecting the isiris selections pluce ruby gale .................... well BINGO !!!! isiris posted a 1-2 for the f/c 16/1 & 8/1 producing a dividend of £118 to a £1 unit and over £350 was given by the happy lass behind the counter , all hell broke loss in the shop , i was the next messiah and even better news came thru when i got a text saying keane had put spurs one up !!!

after the setbacks of the last couple of days i changed tact and took on two favs , trading them to lay at very skinny prices , in the 2.35 fak MH was keen to oppose the mccoy ridden you,ll do for me i had the position of laying £90 @ 2.61 when the tapes went up and in the 4.10 san MH felt the pipe fav prime bere was too short , he made him a 5/2 shot and when the message was released he was trading @ 2.26/2.28 , i laid him at various rates from 2.28 up to 2.36 and backed him at over 2.50 i was left with a lay of £175 @ 1.79 , both were beat and out of the frame , i should consider more place laying !!! anway a profit of £256.36 for me and more important a profit on the day to dispel the magpie fixation ......................

was spent at romford dogs , was a few quid up going to the last and plumped for mercury diamond who prevailed by a head in the lucky last , so after the scampi & chicken in a basket a few drinks i was just over £200 up , shall i include that in my personal trading p/l ........... but would i declare a £200 loss ? nah then it would be under the heading entertainmet !!! if you want the p/l figs fast fwd they are below but got a few things to say relating another blog (thebetfairtrader@blogspot.com) that made interesting reading , lets take the betfairtrader and the question of going f/t on betfair , the first point of interest is the societys perception of gamblers , its ok to work up in the city playing the markets with financial insitutions money but not to set up in your home and do something similar , what i do now is the same as what i did in he city but now im using my money , i was gambling on dollars , euros , yen , sterling then and im now gambling on horses , i admit some cant adapt to a major difference which is , at least in the city you get every month and also the stress of playing and earning a income with your own money , when i first met my fiancee her friends treated me as some leper to be avoided at any cost she was told to dump me asap ,as soon as they asked what i did for a living there faces and whole persona would change they expected me to take her on a slippery slope of debt , hassle , lies , deceit etc etc ok ive introduced her to three of those !!!! (only kidding) im lucky miss d supports me and im totally open she knew january was a awful month but she accepts that part n parcel of what i do . as for me i really dont give a monkeys how other people perceive me if they are not prepared to listen to my side , does it bother me that so n so wont speak to me cos i gamble well .............. whatever , i still manage to have 2/3 holidays a year not bad for a "problem gambler" and enjoy ordering too much shingle !!
the one huge downside to going f/t for me was the lack of office banter and camaraderie , i really miss it , my world can be very insular during the day ,whilst working to some extent i like it as im concentrating on arbing opportunities but there are days when i dont speak to anyone between 8.30am - 6.00 bar my newsagent when getting the post , when miss d arrives home , i really look fwd to her coming home , there are no office night outs or christmas parties , but then thinking about my nights out in the city its just aswell i dont have those anymore !!!
i do have post it notes scattered around my desk saying "discipline" as i feel this is one attribute a f/t player must have , 97/100 i have it ,imlucky with my fathers bookmaking background and he taught me well but once in a while i lose it , usually on a boring dull day , indeed there are many of those "boring dull days" in the life of a f/t player and i personally believe its important to have outside interests totally removed from gambling my main "get out" is gardening , not every ones cup of tea but it works for me relaxing & destressing , outdoors and with a end product , but i love reading , walking , going to the gym and watching sport (even without a bet on it!) . anyway less of my ramblings a interesting subject and well worth a read as was the column by steve palmer in todays post (page96).

all my efforts concerned 2 races @ folkestone , in the first MH was keen to oppose the fav tanzanite dawn when MH gave the message it was trading @ 2.94/2.96 by the time i had got my money on lyrical lily it had annoyingly drifted to 3.25/3.3 so i looked at the spreads and a quote of 22/25 on the 50/25/10 index represented a 2/1 chance so i sold for £10 , i bought £12 of lyrical lily @ 12 on the 50/30/20/10 index with lily winning and dawn out of the frame a maximum sum of £676 was achieved , my only other trade was to back the mccoy ridden moncadou for £100 @ 1.84 in the 2.40 who was successful beating the isiris insider , profit on the day £757.24

in the first at plumpton i was surprised by the drift in malakiya as i have been impressed by its 2 runs at folkestone and stratford but has a penalty for that win and in the heavy ground i decide to keep stakes to a minimum £60 @ 3.9 , my other trade concerned the 3.15 plump where i decided to oppose the local and dance with wolves on stamina concerns laying them @ 3.75 & 5.5 thats 5/4 coupled , migwell takes the race to give me a profit of £309.28 on the day.

as i went down to the kennels to walk my pup who recently arrived over from ireland , spent more time there than expected due to a tour of brewery my mate has set up , obviously their bitter had to pass the diggler taste test !!! im more of a lager man thesedays , im told you usually start on lager then progress to bitter as you get older but im not one to conform to regularity !!! was weaned on greene king ipa at the cricket club from a very early age but as i got older i prefer a pint of fosters but must admit i did enjoy the pint or two today as it wasn,t too heavy . from the kennels went to another mate who owns a garden centre filled the car up with shrubs , trees , bird boxes and conifers got home a listened to the isiris message with kevin playing in the kilmarnock/rangers match opposing the gers, started the pc up and radio5 went over to the match to report a penalty had been given .......................... to rangers with kevin boyd playing against his ex employers , he duly slotted it home and i decided to have a betting free day and spend it in the garden !!!

is a phrase i like to adhere to with regard to my betting , and after racing today one month on from the start of this blog i have decided to make a few changes , these concern the isiris insiders and my own personal trading . as stated before im a old stager with regard to isiris first joining in 1998 at present there is no consistency , well other than they are consistently below average ! all services go through bad times but as a old timer i remember when the good old days and i feel now that the cream of isirs is being diluted we have the main service , mark your card , losers line and now the odds to text service , i am not a lover of this scattergun approach , so until cheltenham im easing back on the insiders to £100/pt from my present £200/pt , cheltenham i will revert to £200/pt and carry this staking plan throughout the summer until arc weekend . my other changes relate to isiris in a way ,in the past i have supplemented my income by arbing their selections but increasingley their selections drift as todays did and the hits that i take on this wipe out to a large extent the small profits i make and the risk/return ratio to me does not add up . lastly one of the many faults i have is that i sometimes over complicate my betting strategies and today was a costly example of this , in the 3.15 newb i had negatives for papini from 2 respected judges so instead of layinng it in the win/place mkt i decided to go via the spreadbetting route as i had positives for quatre heures , i sold papini in the matchbet scenario on the spreads , papini was duly beaten but quatre heures whose chances were done no favours at the start was unsighted and a max loss on the spreads was my punishment .............

today after elbdoubleu s narrow defeat yesterday it was the turn of nudge and nurdle owned by the yes no wait sorries , a group of cricket lovers and players from the cheltenham area that include the ex glouces/england seamer mike smith , journo mike lee and run by chris coley the ex glouces chairman amongst others , nudge n nurdle was put up by mh who loves playing in 16+ runner hcap hurdles and he was keen to take on the fav that look , as it turned out the race was reduced to a 14 runner hcap hurdle with 4 non runners including that look , i reckon that if these n/r s came thru at 11am mh would not have gone with the bet , optimum racing were unlucky not to collect with haunted house with the horse making a customary jumping error and a less than inspired ride from dicky johnson but a decent day and hopefully the green shoots of recovery can continue tomorrow !

1 trade at kempton , involving the 3.10 kemp and the john best trained charlies double a horse i know really well as i was involved with the horse until recently the horse needs good/firm ground and a distance , his hurdle viictories were all over in excess of 2m6f he will stay forever and is bred accordingly , i layed the horse agressively in the place market at prices from 2.26/2.84 , as todays run was over the minimum distance and on soft sticky ground , the horse was the first beaten and a profit of £425.75 .

a successful day started off by rowlands dream where i backed £75 @ 8/1 and laid back @ 8.4 on betfair to register a £45 profit as the mare was successful , i traded the isiris race backing party boss @ 13/10 and laying waterside @ 2.46 as i noticed paddy power and one other went 6/4 so i had a safety net, i either had a profit of £45.65/£58.40 or £76.90 on the race thankfully party boss won giving me a winning insider and a profit of £76.90 . betfair had a avb mkt on the 4.20 even more v malaga boy , i made even more a 4/7 fav in the bet and as i was flicking thru the mkts i noticed you could back even more for £100 @ 1.90 i snapped that up , next time i looked even more was trading below 1.70 the bet never looked in danger .i was hoping to arb the mh selection elbdoubleu at taunton i had £100 ew @ 10/1 and pre race i had arbed £25 ew but the horse drifted so i was left with £75 ew , i/r i laid £325 @ 4.6 . this s/h photo verdict did not go our way but i collected just under £400 on the race , overall a profit on the day of £607.09.

4 trades from isiris today and for once i agree with kevins message , yes members were unlucky not to post a decent profit today , kevins message can sometimes be a little frustrating to say the least , he should try living in the real world not his "fantasy island" . personally i was pleased he didn,t go with a main account in the bumper @ fontwell , picture the scenario from my point of view we having 2 losing insider bets a losing main account bet and i am at the spurs/man utd mismatch as im a long suffering spurs season ticketholder ............... 4.35 call back for the bumper im at the match can i hear the message ? can i get the price even if i knew the horse ? well its no to both of these questions ,and my team play, well no they dont play and get stuffed 4 zip !!!! , so in the end unlucky not to have a decent day but after being £800 down im pleased to come out of the day unscathed .

was well respected in the bookmaking industry with nearly 40 years experience in shops (not the amusement arcades they are now!) and on course both horse and greyhound racing , he once said to me " the one advantage the punter has in his battle with the bookies is selectivity , we have to play and price up every event , the punter can specialize on a niche market and play accordingly when the odds are in their favour" although obvious its clear that people often bet on too many races just look at the betfair forum with punters saying these are my selections today ................. and there may be 6/8 of them !!!! the reason i like the service offered by mh is that he specialises in hurdle races and is selective with his bets . today isiris gave out 6 bets there was no damage done and a 12/1 winner but thats not the point in my opinion a serious racing service should not be giving out 6 bets in one day .

my main strategy revolved around the 2.35 chepstow where i was keen to lay midas way over stamina concerns in the soft ground and 2 1/2mile trip altough beaten into 3rd he looked to be struggling some way out but kept on really well in my opinion so although i collected my thinking looked flawed ! on the positive side i traded the race really well laying @ 3.0/3.1 and backing @ 3.3/3.7 i ended up with a liabilty of £96.50 but a profit of £284.50 meaning that i had layed the 5/2 fav at close to 1/3 !! my dad would be proud of me ! profit on the day £274.57
